Margie R. Pye

Making art has been a part of Margie Pye’s life since childhood. “The medium I use has changed many times’” she says, “but the need to create has remained constant.” Early on Margie worked as a jeweler and taught jewelry making to adults and children. Her work was sold in galleries in Brooklyn, New Jersey and Manhattan. “After 15 years I felt a need for a change and got my Master’s degree in art therapy from N.Y.U. As my work as a therapist evolved, I painted in watercolor and started a family.”

In 1992 Margie was asked to join several artists in forming a gallery in New Jersey: “It was a wonderful experience to work all the aspects of running a gallery, including curating shows, jurying work, exhibiting and being involved in the business end of it all.” This gallery, "The Pierro Gallery," has just celebrated its 16th year.

During this time Margie studied tapestry art for several years and continued doing watercolor. It was when she moved to Tucson, Arizona, however, that her work changed in so many ways: “I now do acrylic abstracts, influenced by the energy of the desert and inspired by my interest in eastern meditation and philosophy. My art comes from a place deep inside. I don't start with a preconceived idea. I try to quiet any expectations of a product and let the paint create a dialogue with the canvas. There are of course many years of art training behind this, but the goal is always to work to capture that dialogue so that the work stays spontaneous and free.”

Margie’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries in New York, New Jersey and Arizona. Her most recent and upcoming shows include the Arizona Aqueous Exhibit in Tubac, Arizona; Details Art and Design Gallery in Tucson and the Toscana Gallery, also in Tucson.
